The Aisuru botnet launched one of the largest distributed denial-of-service attacks ever recorded, reaching peak traffic volumes of nearly 30 terabits per second and overwhelming several major U.S. internet service providers. The assault originated from hundreds of thousands of compromised Internet of Things devices, including home routers, cameras, and DVRs, which were coordinated to flood network infrastructure with junk traffic. The scale and duration of the incident caused temporary congestion and service degradation across multiple broadband networks, highlighting systemic weaknesses in consumer-device security and network resilience.

The botnet’s rise was accelerated by the absorption of devices from dismantled rival botnets, giving Aisuru unprecedented capacity. Analysts noted that the attackers appeared to test different routing and amplification methods to maximize disruption while evading mitigation tools. The event underscores the persistent risk posed by unsecured IoT ecosystems, where outdated firmware and weak authentication allow attackers to weaponize everyday devices for massive, coordinated cyberattacks against critical communications infrastructure.
