The more important question that you might want to ask is: *who* should you trust for your information?

The recent (so-called) malware attack at the Vermont electric utility on 30-Dec-2016 (Friday) demonstrates that, due to political agendas, that intelligence information may be manipulated. Throughout most of Friday, DHS (and its various departments) and FBI, hosted conference calls pertaining to Grizzly Steppe — the latest APT/malware that originated from Russia.

Never mind what the intentions were, how it was determined that the 20+ other APTs are somehow associated with Grizzley Steppe, or who was able to ascertain that this ‘bug’ was directly affiliated with others such as Blackenergy/Blackenergy 3, Dragonfly, Energetic Bear, et. al. The reason? These other APTs were identified to specifically target the electric industry. Blackenergy 3 was attributed to the Ukraine grid attack in late 2015.

So….how was this determined?

Were the network activities analyzed showing a similar pattern?

Were the code snippets from GS confirmed with code snippets from the other APTs?

Were checksums compared to ascertain similar coding modules?

Conducting comparative analysis takes time, resources, and people who are intimately knowledgeable with the code being analyzed. If the code was quickly analyzed in such a short period of time, there would be required, an exhaustive amount of resources. If the U.S. government knew about this previously, then this raises trust issues with all of the previous APTs identified by our government.

Then…there’s the Vermont electric utility claiming a *single* laptop — that was not connected to any critical systems that *control* our electric grid — and that only *one* news source reported this event — once again, raises validity and trust issues, not just with our federal government, but now with new media being considered as pawns to our federal government.

The ultimate question is: how many of the other ‘incidents’ actually happened?
