Emera, Nova Scotia Power respond to cybersecurity breach; incident response teams mobilized

Emera Inc. and its subsidiary Nova Scotia Power are responding to a cybersecurity breach involving unauthorized access to parts of their Canadian IT network and business application servers. Upon detecting the incident, the companies activated their response protocols, engaged top cybersecurity firms, and isolated the affected systems. Law enforcement has been notified and an investigation is underway.

Despite the breach, there has been no impact on physical operations in Canada, including power generation and distribution, nor on Emera’s U.S. or Caribbean operations. Service to customers remains unaffected, and the incident is not expected to materially impact Emera’s financial performance, with Q1 financial disclosures proceeding as scheduled on May 8, 2025.

Cybersecurity expert Julien Richard emphasized the broader risks such incidents pose to critical infrastructure and public safety. He warned that attacks on utilities can cause significant downstream effects and stressed the importance of strengthening access control systems.

This incident aligns with a wider 2025 trend of rising cyber threats targeting energy infrastructure globally, often linked to geopolitical tensions and actions by nation-state actors and hacktivist groups.
