Inotiv cyberattack disrupts operations after systems encrypted in ransomware-style breach

Earlier this month, U.S.-based contract research organization Inotiv, which provides nonclinical and analytical drug discovery and development services, fell victim to a ransomware-style cyberattack. The incident, discovered on August 8, 2025, involved unauthorized access and encryption of parts of the company's systems, leading to disruptions in internal networks, data storage, and essential business applications. In response, Inotiv engaged external cybersecurity specialists, notified law enforcement, and activated its business continuity plan, shifting certain operations to offline alternatives while working to restore affected systems—though no timeline for full recovery has been announced.

The ransomware group Qilin (also known as Agenda) claimed responsibility for the attack, asserting that it exfiltrated approximately 162,000 files, totaling around 176 GB, and published sample documents on its leak site—though independent verification remains pending. Qilin, a sophisticated Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) operator active in industrial sectors, has been linked to nearly one-fifth of ransomware incidents in manufacturing in the second quarter of 2025, reflecting its growing reach and aggressive tactics.
