Poland faces record wave of Russian cyber sabotage, sets €1 billion defense budget

Poland is experiencing a severe uptick in Russian cyber sabotage targeting its critical infrastructure—particularly hospitals and city water systems. Officials report they are seeing between 20 and 50 daily attempts to damage infrastructure, most of which are thwarted, though 2-3 successful attacks have forced healthcare facilities to suspend operations for hours, and medical data have been stolen. In one of the most serious incidents, hackers infiltrated the IT network of a major city water system and tried to shut off the taps; they were stopped before that outcome. There are also frequent disruptions to GPS signals and jamming incidents in regions close to Kaliningrad.

In response, Poland is massively boosting its cybersecurity spending: the budget for defensive cyber measures is increasing to €1 billion for the year, up from €600 million in 2024. As part of that, €80 million has been allocated immediately to strengthen water management systems and secure public infrastructure across over 2,400 local administrations. The policy move has broad political support in Poland, crossing party lines. The government frames these investments as necessary amid what it sees as a concerted Russian effort to destabilize Poland and strain its relations with Ukraine.
