Ransomware, data theft strike telecoms in UK and Australia, raising concerns for critical infrastructure

A ransomware-driven data theft incident has disrupted parts of Colt Technology Services’ operations in the UK, as business support systems were taken offline following a cyberattack. The Warlock gang, claiming responsibility, exploited a vulnerability in Colt’s SharePoint systems to access and steal data. They reportedly exfiltrated hundreds of gigabytes of sensitive information—including employee, financial, customer, and network documentation—and are currently auctioning approximately one million stolen files on the dark web.

In Australia, iiNet—a subsidiary of TPG Telecom—suffered a data breach where attackers abused stolen employee credentials to infiltrate its order management system. The breach exposed a wide range of customer data, including around 280,000 email addresses, 20,000 landline numbers, 10,000 usernames, physical addresses, and roughly 1,700 modem setup passwords. Although the attack did not involve financial or identity documents, the volume and nature of the information pose serious risks of phishing, unauthorized access, and operational disruption.
