U.S. Electric Companies Projected to Invest More Than $1.1 Trillion Over the Next Five Years

U.S. electric companies are expected to invest over $1.1 trillion from 2025 to 2029 to support the country’s growing energy needs and economic development. This investment surge is driven by rapid increases in electricity demand from sectors like AI, data centers, and manufacturing, as well as the broader push for electrification across industries.

In 2024 alone, utilities invested a record $178.2 billion, continuing a 13-year trend of increasing capital spending. These funds are focused on modernizing the grid, expanding clean energy capacity, and strengthening infrastructure to ensure energy reliability and security. The electric power industry now leads all U.S. sectors in capital investment.
