Utah Groups Look at Nuclear Options to Power World’s Largest Data Center Site

Energy and infrastructure stakeholders in Utah have entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore how nuclear power could contribute to electricity supply for a proposed mega-scale data center campus, potentially the largest in the world once built. Creekstone Energy, the developer behind the project, is working with EnergySolutions—a Utah-based nuclear services firm—to assess whether at least 2 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear capacity could be part of a multi-source power strategy that also includes solar, natural gas, and other resources to meet the enormous and growing energy demands of AI and digital infrastructure. The evaluation phase will examine technical feasibility, regulatory pathways, and commercial considerations for integrating nuclear generation alongside conventional and renewable sources to support long-term reliability and capacity requirements.

This effort reflects broader industry pressures as hyperscale computing and AI workloads drive unprecedented data center power consumption and trigger exploration of diverse supply options. The nuclear component under review would likely involve advanced or next-generation reactor technologies that could operate in concert with other resources to provide continuous, high-capacity power without the carbon emissions associated with fossil fuels. Stakeholders are targeting commercial operation in the early 2030s, contingent on regulatory progress, technology selection, and infrastructure planning, underscoring the long-range nature of such energy investments for future digital infrastructure expansion.
